Friends of Myriad
Written out of conflicting emotions during an 8:45AM algebra class

Flirting with freedom
Feel my hair growing long
Waving in the wind
Sedated by the sun
Sifts out all complexities
Anonymous contribution
Ambiguous visitation
From the celestial sphere
Colombus' expedition
The meaning long forgotten
Only lives on in vague ideas
And strange poetic references
Holistic worldview
Can't be subdivided
In to positive and negative
Laid down in a material compost heap
Dug myself a hole that I could
Lose all sense of self in
Out on the water
With a fear in my head
And a shiver in my step
A whole mess of meaningless lovers
Laid out in the sun
Tanned and sparkling
Getting my blood all hot
But good God, no
I'm looking down her dress again
Can't get past a hard body
Or pretty eyes
See what's underneath
A handful of stale ideas
Fishy compliments
Rank - smells of last week's crush
Wholly holy
But not an ounce of humility
Livid, cramped in to a shallow tin can
Laid alongside my expressionless kin
Eyes round, mouths agape (gaping)
Heads hollow and hearts hallowed
We drag our feet in quiet resignation
Chained to long lists of pass success and failure
Arbitrary functions
Thinking in squares
Study the hip crowd
And try to make a dent
To leave a mark
Somewhere along the line
We hopped to the other side of the tracks
We, the wilting stems
Of the first family
Of the name of the land
We who saw the spring
And cupped our hands to drink from it
We who run to catch our wild spirits
That have fled to the hills
Sniffing incense
Chewing leaves
Taking pills
And smoking sleeves
All along
We carried on
In the spirit of those
Long since gone
Black-eyed
White-fisted
Red-faced
Yellow-bellied
Blue-balled
Honeysuckled
Fair-haired
And sultry-lipped
Atom bomb
Splitting herself with aeronautic precision
No need to consider the aftermath
The long-standing peeling of skin
And bubbling of flesh
You just can't plan for these things
Because you never know what's going to happen.
